Backfire through intake carburetor

Jan 22, 2011 · It is not fuel or carburation. (I rebuilt the carb and I also replaced the carb with no change). I also confirmed the governor is correctly adjusted. Compression is low at 75 PSI vs Honda's spec of 85-120 and the backfiring appears to be coming thru the intake as it bogs under load. I'm thinking this is looking like a valve or head gasket problem.

There will also be some rust on the plug electrode from the cyl that is getting water. Sometimes water in a cyl = corroded intake valve stem = valve not closing all the way = backfire through carb. I had this from blown head gaskets but there's other causes.

Backfire through the carb is usually an indication of a timing issue. Are you sure it's through the carb and not the exhaust?
